An Enigmatic Arrival
Sarah Richardson, a devoted rescuer of felines in Little Rock, AR, was engaged in her regular routine of feeding the feral colony of cats when a peculiar cat materialized out of nowhere. Sarah detected something out of the ordinary about the feline’s behavior, as it appeared to be disoriented and unable to navigate the surroundings with ease. When Sarah tried to approach the cat, it became startled and fled. Despite this, Sarah was determined to extend a helping hand to the cat but opted for a more cautious approach. She set up a humane trap, aware that something was amiss with the cat. After five nights of waiting with bated breath, the enigmatic white cat finally made its way into the trap! Upon closer inspection, Sarah was taken aback.
An Unexpected Find
Sarah was taken aback to discover that the cat was completely oblivious to his surroundings. She was convinced that he couldn’t hear or see anything, and it became apparent when he aimlessly wandered around the trap and bumped into its walls. It made her wonder how he had survived all this time on his own if he was both blind and deaf. Although he was clearly malnourished, there were no visible signs of any other injuries or harm on his body.
Despite his lovely white fur and friendly personality, Olaf had terrible eye problems that were causing him immense discomfort. According to Sarah, his eyes were mostly shut due to the severity of the condition. However, she decided to give him a fitting name by likening him to the beloved character from Frozen. The next day, she took Olaf to the veterinarian for treatment and to get some answers about his condition.
An Enigma Unraveled
It was finally revealed that Sarah’s doubts were valid – Olaf was dealing with both hearing and sight impairment. The veterinarian diagnosed him with entropion, an uncommon eye disorder wherein his eyelids turn inward, causing his lashes to grow inwards as well. This resulted in his eyes getting hurt every time he blinked. It was evident that he had been experiencing immense agony due to this condition.
Due to the significant damage to Olaf’s eyes, it was uncertain how much vision he would regain. To prevent further damage, the veterinarian temporarily sewed his eyelids shut. This provided relief to Olaf as he no longer experienced constant irritation.
Olaf’s eye condition required him to undergo specialized surgery, as sewing his eyelids shut was only a temporary solution. Unfortunately, the surgery was expected to be quite costly, which made acquiring funds a huge challenge. It is common in the world of cat rescue for cats like Olaf to be euthanized as rescuers generally lack the resources for expensive medical procedures. Despite this, Sarah remained determined to help Olaf and contacted Susan from FuRR (Feline Rescue Rehome) in Central Arkansas. Fortunately, FuRR was more than willing to assist Olaf and welcomed him with open arms.
Thanks to FuRR, Sarah was able to locate a suitable expert for Olaf’s eye operation. The procedure provided relief to Olaf from the persistent agony of his ailment and restored some of his sight. According to Sarah, “Although his eye appeared somewhat damaged during the initial two weeks after the surgery, when he finally opened them, they revealed stunning, large blue eyes.”
Olaf’s Incredible Journey to Healing
The resilience of Olaf, a deaf and blind dog, left an indelible impression on each veterinarian who treated him during his recovery. Despite his challenges, Olaf managed to survive in the wild for a considerable period before being rescued when he was estimated to be between 2 to 3 years old. It’s evident that he has an unshakable determination to thrive.
Fortunately, Olaf’s vision has improved significantly, giving him hope for a brighter future. His journey to healing is a remarkable tale of survival and perseverance.
While Olaf was recuperating from his operation, Sarah worked with FuRR to identify the optimal living arrangements for him. Because he hadn’t interacted much with humans prior to being rescued, he remained anxious and required some socialization. Finding him a suitable home would be difficult, but FuRR formulated an excellent plan to address this challenge.
With the utmost care and consideration for Olaf’s unique needs, FuRR made the decision to have him adopted by their organization. Fortunately, Olaf now resides in a cat sanctuary where he lives in a cozy cat room that comes with a catio and even his very own feline roommate! According to Sarah, Olaf has undergone an incredible transformation and looks absolutely fantastic now. Thanks to the love and support that he receives at the sanctuary, Olaf has gained weight and is utterly spoiled. Gone are the days of uncertainty and worry; Olaf has found a forever home where he will always be safe and cherished.
FuRR is a wonderful organization that has given cats like Olaf a second chance at life. Their main goal is to rescue cats that have been abused, abandoned, or given up for euthanasia at shelters. They also believe in practicing TNR (trap, neuter, return) to control overpopulation and improve the quality of life for feral cats.
