What began as a terrifying ordeal turned into a happy ending, all thanks to compassionate individuals lending a helping hand. One night, Sarah Richardson, a critical care cat rescuer for Community Cats of Central Arkansas, received a phone call from a veterinarian at an emergency clinic requesting her aid in rescuing two kittens who were accidentally injured by a lawnmower.
While mowing the grass on her sprawling property in rural Arkansas, a woman encountered a terrible accident. Lacking any cats of her own and having never spotted felines or their offspring on her land, it was nearly impossible for her to see anything in the tall grass she was trimming. The following morning, as she was walking toward her vehicle, she picked up on faint wails in the distance. She continued to search until she identified the origin of the distressed sounds: two little kittens snuggled together, tightly holding onto one another.
Coming to the Rescue
The lady was in a state of shock as she realized what had happened to the kittens. Without wasting any time, she hurried to take them to the vet for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, she did not have enough funds to pay for the emergency surgery that was needed to save the little ones’ lives. She offered to pay for either medication or euthanasia, whichever was within her budget.
Sarah recounted her experience, saying, “The vet informed me that the kittens required immediate surgical intervention; otherwise, they would have to be put down.” She continued, “We were also running low on funds, but we pooled our resources together and managed to finance a significant part of the surgery cost. I could not bear to let them die.”
The next morning, Sarah rushed the kittens to her personal veterinarian for emergency surgery, which involved amputating their back left leg. Just when things started looking up, Sarah received more alarming news.
The kittens that Sarah had rescued were much younger than she had initially thought. They were only five weeks old and weighed less than a pound, and were not yet fully weaned. Despite their size, Sarah was amazed that they had survived the surgery. Although it was risky for such young kittens to undergo an invasive procedure, Sarah had no other choice but to take the chance. If she didn’t, the kittens would likely not have made it. Fortunately, the surgery went well, and the tiny felines proved themselves to be strong and determined. Nothing could stop their will to survive.
Two Feline Siblings with Similarities
Sarah named her two adorable kittens, Jack and Jill, fitting names for twin cats. These siblings are so alike that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart, if not for their gender difference. Interestingly, both of their back left legs have been amputated, making them identical tripods.
The unbreakable connection between Jack and Jill is truly one of a kind. Their unwavering love and encouragement have helped them endure even the toughest of times. Sarah has pledged to find them a home where they can stay together as a committed duo. In her words, “It’s vital that they stay together. They’ve been through so much, and I couldn’t bear to separate them.”
After undergoing surgery, Jack and Jill have successfully transitioned from milk to cat food. Sarah, impressed by their resilience, commented on how the kittens have been champs throughout their journey. Although they are still getting accustomed to walking on three legs, they have made significant progress. With the toughest part behind them, Jack and Jill can now enjoy being playful and carefree kittens. Sarah noted that they are already tumbling around and happily playing with their toys, showcasing their lively personalities.
The kittens will require additional veterinary check-ups to ensure that they are recovering properly. After reaching the appropriate age, they will undergo complete vetting and be spayed or neutered, making them ready for adoption by their forever family. Despite the woman’s efforts to locate the mother cat or other kittens, she was unsuccessful in her attempts. Although there is uncertainty about how Jack and Jill became stranded in the fields, their safe and secure rescue has brought immeasurable relief to everyone involved. Sarah expressed amazement at how the kittens managed to survive with their injuries overnight, but she was ecstatic that they were rescued in time.
